In February our thoughts turn to sweethearts, and this month's featured dog certainly fits in that category! He's "CH Painted Mtn Gallant Man, TT, HCT, CGC" - "Dagen" to friends. If you're a real close friend (or you bring him a sweet Valentine), you might be able to get away with one of his pet names - Dagen-Doo, BBIT, or Pee-Boy! (More about those later…)
Six-year old Dagen lives with human mom Holly Beck and new Swissy housemate "Vista" in what might truly be Mountain Dog Heaven - Yosemite National Park, California. There he enjoys daily hikes, including a 50 minute jaunt to the mailbox every morning before breakfast! For Dagen, that breakfast typically consists of the best freshly prepared meals, including raw turkey necks, backs and organs (hey, that's caviar for dogs!), and the occasional "Pumpkin Bow-wow." Told you it was dog heaven! And since they're at 5,500 feet, all that clean mountain air and good living have him in great shape.
He also enjoys pulling his cart, so much so that Holly's considering a travois or dogsled, so they can keep at their favorite activities well into the snowy winter months. Dagen has worked to add a Novice Working Pack Dog title to his list of accomplishments, and so far has three legs completed. Only one to go!
Now, what about those names? Well, apparently he thoroughly enjoys "watering" the flora of Yosemite (and elsewhere), sometimes at inopportune moments. Hence the Pee-Boy! "BBIT" stands for "Black Bear in Training" and he's got plenty of examples in the park. He's a good student, so far, he's got garbage raiding and spreading down pat, and any food must be kept locked behind a baby gate, or high in a cabinet just like the bear-proof containers. But, he does do a good job of warding off the real bears, so Holly figures she'll keep him around!
