AKC CONFORMATION
Conformation events held under the rules and regulations of the American Kennel Club (AKC) are intended to provide a forum for the evaluation of breeding stock. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs (GSMD) are judged against an individual breed standard, which has been established by the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America and approved by the AKC for use at AKC conformation events. The breed standard is the written description of what would be a perfect GSMD, and describes the physical and mental characteristics that recognize the historical function and appearance of the dog. The AKC breed standard can be viewed at “web link”. At an AKC conformation event approved judges examine the dogs and place them in accordance with how closely they compare with their image of the perfect GSMD as detailed in the AKC breed standard.
To be eligible to compete, a GSMD must:
Spayed or neutered dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes, as the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock.
A GSMD will receive their AKC Conformation Championship (designated at Ch. before their name) when they win at least 15 points, including two majors (wins of three, four or five points) under at least three different judges. The number of points won depends upon the number of dogs actually defeated, with five points being the maximum number of points that can be awarded at any one show.
